Expanding Frontiers in Vernal Pools Scientific Research

Defined as temporal wetlands, vernal pools result from the flooding of shallow depressions at ground level, without lateral or vertical drainage. They have visual phases, starting with flooding, followed by a waterlogged period, and concluding in total desiccation. Low oxygen levels, methane accumulation, and water defficit are conditions resulting from the dynamics of the ecosystem, favoring the colonization of specialized plants, animals, and microorganisms.
Las charcas vernales se definen como un humedal temporal que resulta de la inundación de depresiones con poca profundidad, sin drenaje vertical o lateral. Visualmente presentan fases, primero de inundación, seguida de un periodo anegado terrestre y finalmente desecación total. Las condiciones de poco oxigeno y desecación producto de estas fases propician la colonización de plantas, animales y microorganismos especializados al ecosistema.
